Advice given to the parents of children being victims of bullying

Surely nobody wishes for their child to have the experience of being bullied. However, it can happen and we should handle it as parents.

1.    Observe your child’s behaviour. Any sudden change in their behaviour without any obvious reason, should concern us
2.    Talk in a spirit of assurance and confidence with your child about their experience
3.    Absolve the child from its feeling of guilt
4.    Reward your child for the disclosure.
5.    Communicate clearly that nobody has the right to treat them that way
6.    Don’t ask of them to do to another child “the same”
7.    Demonstrate the importance of having contact with the teacher
8.    Explain the difference between “snitching” and “asking” for help
9.    You contact the teacher as well
10.    Call the National Helpline for Children SOS 1056, free and anonymously, to talk with a psychologist
